Welcome on the website of the EnergyMonitor of the TU Delft. On this Monitor we present the energy usage of the TU Delft. Electricity, natural gas and heat usage is shown voor each building and for the campus as a whole.

With this website we want to share information on the trajectory the TU Delft is following to improve the sustainability of its energy usage. We welcome new insights of staff and students to contribute to this goal.

At the date of launch of this website (september 2013) not all textual information is complete. We continiuously work on completing and updating the information. We welcome initiatives of users of the various buildings to supply additional information of inform us on changes regarding a building. Therefor you can find a person to contact on the contact page with each building shown on the 'Buildings' page for any questions, remarks or additional information you want to share.

Why this website?

In a long-term agreement (the MJA3), the Dutch universities, including TU Delft, committed themselves to improving energy efficiency by 2% per year until 2020: by 2020, energy efficiency must have improved by 30% compared to 2005 levels. This means that the consumption of fossil fuels per m2 of gross floor area must have fallen by 30% by means of energy savings, the use of more efficient types of fossil fuel conversion and the introduction of renewable forms of energy.

In order to monitor progress in improving energy performance, TU Delft has decided to make energy supplies on the campus completely public and transparent. On this website, you can view the current and historic energy consumption for the campus as a whole and at faculty level. This makes it possible to assess the impact of measures to improve efficiency. Students, staff, administrators and technicians are warmly invited to take a look and suggest additional ideas for improving energy performance on the campus. We are completely open to experimentation!

   

This website is a joint initiative of the Delft Energy Initiative and the Facility Management and Real Estate (FMRE) department.

 

Guide to the website

The website presents the energy streams on the TU Delft campus at three levels:

  • Energy usage at TU Delft campus as a whole
  • Energy usage for each faculty or building
  • The conversion of gas to electricity and heat in the University’s CHP plant. Units

  

Units

  • Electricity consumption is shown in MWh (megawatt hour). 1 MWh = 1000 kWh (kilowatt hour). A figure to remember: the total electricity consumption at TU Delft is currently approximately 70,000 MWh (70 million kWh) – the equivalent of 20,000 households.
  • Heat consumption (supplied via TU Delft’s heating network) is expressed in Nm3 natural gas equivalents (nge). A demand for heat amounting to 31.65 MJ (Mega Joule; 1 MJ = 0.278 kWh) corresponds to 1 Nm3 natural gas equivalents (this is the amount of heat released on combustion at 100% boiler efficiency).The “N” in Nm3 stands for “normal” – if pressure and temperature vary, the natural gas volume is converted to 1 atm and 00 C. This “N” is not shown on the website, but all cases actually refer to “normal m3”.

The Bigger picture

If your main interest is to gain an overview of energy consumption in the last five years, we recommend that you consult the Excel worksheet on the TU Delft campus page that includes this overview by using the download button at the top right of the screen.

 

TUD campus

The total energy usage at TU Delft is made up of the amounts of electricity and natural gas purchased. In addition to the total figures, energy consumption per person (students and staff) and per m2 of gross floor area (all the floor area, including corridors, service areas, etc) are also shown.

 

Energy useage for each faculty or building

Under the “faculties” button, the electricity, gas and heat consumption for each faculty or building (such as the Library) is shown. In general, the faculties are accommodated across several buildings. In the next update of this website, all energy consumption figures will be divided according to the individual buildings.

Using the information button on the top right of the screen, you can see for each faculty what energy measures have been implemented in the past and which measures are planned for the future.

Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant

In its own CHP plant, TU Delft produces heat and part of the electricity used. Most of the heat is generated in large heating boilers, and in part using the combined heat and power (CHP) gas engines, that also supply electricity. The hot water (100-130oC) is transported to the different buildings through an underground network of pipes. Some buildings still have their own gas-fired central heating boilers. Three of the buildings are equipped with modern heat pumps for heating and cooling, which use underground heat and cold storage in what are known as aquifers. Under the “Energy production” button, the energy demand and production figures (heat and electricity) are shown for the heat and power co-generator.

  

Comparing the different buildings 

If you press the “compare” button, you will see a comparison of the different faculties and other buildings, in which energy consumption is expressed per square meter of gross floor area (gfa). It reveals significant discrepancies, which are, of course, a result of the age and maintenance condition of the various buildings, as well at the type of energy consumption. For example, certain laboratories or ICT departments may be major consumers of power.

  

Statistics

Data relating to energy consumption and the associated CO2 emissions is shown on the website in bar charts. On the top right of each screen, you will also find a button which you can use to download the relevant figures in an Excel file. You can also obtain a total overview on the TU Delft page.
